Summer 2018 has come and gone but not without leaving us with some sweet memories. For the month of August, Hood Famous collaborated with Molly Moon’s in honor of their 10th birthday. Together we created an extra special “birthday cake” collaboration by combining chunks of our calamansi cheesecake with Molly’s ice cream. But don’t let the purple color trick you into thinking it’s ube (purple yam)! That lavender tint actually comes from the organic blueberries that are also mixed throughout the ice cream, sourced by Bow Hill Blueberries in Skagit Valley.
Chera and Molly first met about a few years ago while supporting a local nonprofit, Families of Color Seattle (FOCS) and instantly bonded over being mothers and female entrepreneurs. They are both driven by supporting their communities and utilizing their businesses and products as a platform to share their values of social justice and passion for community activism. This collaboration is just one way they continue to support each other’s businesses and growth, especially as women. For this specific collab we decided to pair Chera’s favorite citrus—calamansi—along with Molly’s lemon-blueberry ice cream. Calamansi, also known as the Philippine lime, is a citrus fruit native to the Philippines. It can be described as a mix between a kumquat and a mandarin orange. For a citrus, it’s more on the sweeter side but with a nice tang and tartness that pairs really well with creamy desserts like cheesecake and ice cream. So a cheesecake AND ice cream collaboration was a no-brainer for this summer flavor.
The seasonal ice cream flavor has since come to an end but it was sweet while it lasted. This will definitely not be the last of our collaborative relationships. As entrepreneurs, we believe working together with local like-minded small businesses is a beautiful way to build community. And if there happens to be cake, well then we’re gonna eat it too!
